Bobby Fischer vs Miguel Najdorf 1962

Robert James “Bobby” Fischer is considered by many as one of the greatest chess players of all time. His name is synonymous with chess in the USA. Bobby Fischer was born in 1943. At the age of 13 he earned the brilliancy price in the Rosenwald Memorial Tournament against Donald Byrne, the game is known as “The Game of the Century”. Fischer participated in eight US Chess Championships, winning each one of them. In 1971 he became the first official number one rated chess player of FIDE. In 1972 he won the World Chess Championship from Boris Spassky. Bobby Fischer died in 2008

 

Miguel Najdorf was an Argentinian Chess Grandmaster born in 1910. He was discovered and trained by Savielly Tartakower when he was 12 years old. Najdorf played most of his life semi-professionally was nevertheless a leading player in the 1950s and 60s. He gives the arguably most researched chess opening, the Sicilian Najdorf Variation its name.

This game saw the Argentinian playing his namesake defence. Fischer plays a very aggressive pawn sacrifice that Najdorf at first declines but 2 moves later accepts. A classic chess game that is also featured in Bobby Fischer´s “My 60 memorable games”.
